Why Your Menstrual Cup Might Be Slipping on Heavy Days & How to Fix It
Aug 05, 2025

If your menstrual cup is slipping, sliding, or struggling to stay put during your heaviest period days, you’re so not alone. It can be frustrating, especially when your cup usually works just fine on lighter days.
At Poppins Period, we design our menstrual cups with firmer medical-grade silicone to help create a strong, secure seal. But even with the right firmness and size, heavy flow can sometimes throw things off.
Here’s why your cup might be slipping on heavy days, and what you can do to fix it.
Why Do Menstrual Cups Slip During a Heavy Period?
During your heaviest flow, your body is releasing more fluid in a shorter amount of time. This can actually make it harder for your cup to create a strong suction seal, because all that moisture can prevent the cup from gripping properly to the vaginal walls.
Plus, a very full cup can get heavy, which can cause the suction to break and the cup to start sliding down.
5 Easy Fixes to Stop Your Menstrual Cup From Slipping
1. Insert it slightly higher
If your cup is sitting too low, it’s more likely to slip—especially when your flow is heavier. Try inserting the cup a bit deeper into the vaginal canal to help it settle into a more secure spot where it can seal properly.
2. Use the cold water trick
Before inserting your cup, rinse it under cold water. This firms up the silicone slightly, making it easier for the cup to pop open and form a solid seal.
3. Give it a spin
Once your cup is in place, gently hold the base and rotate it 360°. This helps ensure the cup is fully open and has sealed all the way around- an easy but effective step to improve suction.
4. Check in with your pelvic floor
If your cup continues to slide, even after adjusting placement, your pelvic floor muscles might need a little love. A weaker pelvic floor can make it harder to hold your cup in place, especially under the pressure of a heavy flow. Adding some pelvic floor exercises (like Kegels!) to your routine could make a big difference.
5. Empty more often on heavy days
Even if your Poppins Period cup has a great capacity, don’t push it to the limit on your heaviest days. A super full cup gets heavier and is more likely to lose suction. Try emptying a little more frequently to keep things secure.
Final Thoughts
A menstrual cup slipping during your period isn’t just annoying, it can throw off your whole day. But with a few quick adjustments, your cup can stay just as reliable on your heavy days as it is the rest of your cycle.
